Sound Demos
What does SKULPTsynth SE sound like?
Synth-Eldorado
Two WAVE groups per voice with four oscillators each provide profound hands-on control over the sound and sweep smoothly between sine, triangle, saw, square, PWM and Noise sources. Additional oscillator modulation using FM, Ring Modulation or the hugely powerful on-board LFOs unveil an unmatched potential for sound customisation.
The state-variable 2-pole filters morph from lowpass through to bandpass and through to highpass. With its resonance feature, it picks out rich harmonics at high resonance levels.
Three dedicated envelopes for the filter, amp and modulation give excessive control of the dynamics and expression. Two LFOs, one global and one polyphonic, can be synced to internal or external tempo. The polyphonic LFO also syncs to a division of the played notes’ fundamental frequency for both brutal and subtle modulation of the sound.
Next-Gen Performances Out Of The Box
SKULPTsynth SE supports MPE and offers musicians creative new musical ways to model sounds with your fingertips. Connect your MPE compatible MIDI controller and endeavour next-generation expressive sound articulations only possible with a real instrument like SKULPTsynth SE.
SKULPTsynth SE has a deceptively capable real-time sequencer onboard. It is pretty easy to capture performances, quantise, loop & hold them, and capture four lanes of Animation on the fly. This alone introduces some crazy modulation possibilities and is key to getting to know this synthesiser.
This, coupled with the adaptable on-board arpeggiator, chord and transpose functions, opens an entire new world for complex and exciting synth sounds.
Polish With Effects
Built-in distortion (waveshaping overdrive) and delay effects add character and depth to the signal. The distortion delivers interesting overtone textures from subtitle to heavy overdrive.
The delay effect injects expressive complexity from short slap-backs, and room-style reverb sounds to long overlaying or psychedelic echoes using the sequencer animation. To create chorusing and other time-based effects the delay can be modulated. Internal or external sync generate rhythmic interaction with the tempo of a track.
Open To All Environments
SKULPTsynth SE has a comprehensive set of connections to power and control the synth using USB, monitor with headphones or using the dedicated line output, sync with external gear using the full-size MIDI in and out or the 3.5 mm Sync in or outputs.
The Global Tune Setting ensures a perfect integration into mixed setups with other, less accommodating equipment in studio and live applications, like analogue synthesisers or DJ turntables, which tend to be less precise in tuning.
Expanding the sound of SKULPTsynth SE is possible by polychaining up to 4 units for a total of 16 voices and 128 oscillators.
Made to Move
Weighing in at just over 0.6kg and featuring a compact, go-anywhere footprint, SKULPTsynth SE is primed for your creative exploits wherever inspiration strikes.
A lightweight, robust hard plastic enclosure with removable protection hood, plus power via USB or 6 x AA batteries (not included), makes SKULPTsynth SE the ultimate feature-packed pocket-sized synth that’s ripe for any scenario you throw at it – whether it’s an impromptu jam, a studio session or a live performance, this powerhouse of a synth delivers.
From the press
MusicTech – “The SKULPTsynth SE is designed to be a creative tool in a portable package. The amount of functionality that Modal has crammed into such a small space is astounding.”
Juno – “The Skulpt proves that good things come in small packages, offering far more potential than you might expect for such a minuscule synth. “
Ask.Audio – “It’s at once a fun and portable synthesiser and a really serious instrument capable of some enormous sounds, and with a real depth of sound shaping and editing capabilities…If you’re looking for a portable powerhouse that can make great sounds and also teach you something about synthesis, Modal’s SKULPT is well worth a look.”
Sonicstate – “I must confess, I was pleasantly surprised by the sounds Skulpt makes, it has an organic, musical feel which is perhaps not what you might expect from a pure DSP synth. “
Music Radar – “[SKULPT is] a flexible instrument and capable of a good variety of synth sound styles, from modern, frequency-filling basses to trance-like chord progressions, bubbling FX and much more besides. It’s at its best when making the most of its voice modes, FM and ring mod and creating complex modern sounds rather than replicating vintage-style patches.”

Please update your SKULPTsynth SE via the standalone MODALapp
Improvements:
- Improved USB MIDI Connectivity on Mac OS Big Sur
- Enhanced reliability for large data transfers with MODALapp
Features:
- Support for SKULPTsynth SE
Improvements:
- Updated factory content (SKULPTsynth SE only)
- Changed default state of ‘MIDI-IN OCT OFFSET’ to ‘on’ during factory reset
- Fixed inconsistent behaviour immediately after a factory reset
- Improved the factory reset procedure LED feedback
Fixes:
- Fixed issue where fine tune would not be zero after initialising a patch
- Maintenance
Features:
- MPE support – SKULPTsynthesiser now supports MPE-compatible MIDI controllers, allowing you to apply polyphonic control and expression to individual notes
- Sustain / Arp Latch Mode – Press and release a note / chord to sustain it, press a new note / chord to overwrite the existing one. This functions as a classic arp hold that can also be used when the arp is off. Hold the ‘Sustain’ button for one second when turning on sustain to enable Sustain Latch Mode, turning off sustain will clear the latch mode.
- Global Tune global setting
- MIDI-in Octave global setting – a new setting for allowing the keyboard octave parameter to also affect MIDI-in notes
Improvements:
- Touch pad sensitivity global setting – allows you to change the sensitivity of touch pad 1. A device reboot is required to apply any changes made to this setting.
- Improved stability in MIDI loop situations (particularly when assigning mod slots)
- Clock Source is now selectable from the device – hold the ‘Play’ button on boot and use the touch pads to select the source (1-4 = internal, 5-8 = MIDI, 9-12 = Sync-in, 13-16 = Auto)
- MIDI message merging – if MIDI aftertouch, pitch bend, modulation wheel or expression pedal messages are being received from both USB MIDI and DIN MIDI simultaneously these messages are now merged to prevent each source ‘fighting’ for control of the voice engine.
- Reseting of MIDI-in modulation values when loading / initing a patch (to prevent an issue where the device may need to be power-cycled if a MIDI controller is disconnected whilst sending modulation messages)
- The ‘Randomise Patch’ function now uses a SysEx message instead of CC 121. CC 121 (‘Reset All Controllers’) has been implemented as per the MIDI specification – resets control values for mod wheel, expression pedal, sustain pedal, aftertouch and pitch bend. This improves compatibility with external MIDI software / hardware that transmits CC 121 for its intended purpose.
Fixes:
- Fixed bug where Chord Mode chords couldn’t be set from external MIDI devices
- Fixed issue where MIDI-synced LFOs would take 2 beats to sync when MIDI clock messages are first being received (requires MIDI start to be sent as well)
- Fixed issue where the internal clock wasn’t being set to the internal tempo when falling back from an external MIDI or Sync-in clock source
- Fixed issue where the device wouldn’t always report back an error when attempting to assign a duplicate mod slot on MODALapp
- Fixed issue where enabling any of the MIDI DIN in filters could result in aftertouch from the DIN-in not being processed
- Fixed issue where using Chord Mode whilst MIDI Local is off may result in incorrect notes in the chord
- Fixed issue where sending CC 120 (All Sound Off) or CC 123 (All Notes Off) may result in stuck notes in the arp
- Fixed arp LED not flashing when in the relevant boot mode
- Fixed potential issue when sending the device a very large stream of MIDI notes
- Fixed issue where turning MIDI Local off could result in stuck notes in the arp
- MIDI local and Arp/Seq Out settings for better control over MIDI routing
- Added boot modes for setting these on the unit
- Fixed issue with chord mode and external devices on some MIDI channels
- Fixed bug where metronome could become offset when using sequence hold/loop
